The North East Students Organisation (NESO) did not hold back on Friday calling out the police for their harsh response to students protesting in New Delhi about the NEET paper leak. Instead of wielding force, NESO demanded real dialogue with students and broader reforms to fix the broken exam and recruitment systems in the country
In their statement, NESO representing student groups across the Northeast called the baton charges, tear gas, and reports of plainclothes officers with lathis during the July 20 protest an “assault on democratic values” and a violation of students constitutional right to assemble peacefully
NESO chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa was pretty blunt, saying the government approach to the protests was a real letdown. He stressed that students with genuine concerns should never be met with violence
Jyrwa spelled it out it is unacceptable to let the dreams and hard work of so many students get crushed by corruption or administrative mess ups
He backed the protesters demands strict action against ongoing exam leaks and honest reforms to ensure fairness and transparency in how exams and recruitments are run. These issues he said,need immediate attention
Jyrwa called on the government to talk to students openly and honestly, not just push them back with force. If the government really wants people to trust the exam system again, it has to take responsibility and fix what is broken
NESO also stood in solidarity with everyone injured by the police, wishing them a quick recovery and applauding them for speaking up
“We stand with the students who had the courage to demand a fair and transparent system. And to those hurt during the protests get well soon,” Jyrwa said
